In the 1930s, the Soviets experimented with training dogs to deliver first aid, track land mines, transport food, and detonate enemy targets. Twelve regional dog schools were opened in Moscow, and by 1935, anti-mine dog units were officially included in the Soviet Army. However, the project was later abandoned because the dogs were too afraid of bomb blasts to be truly effective.
